Archdiocese of Davao

Archbishop:

THE MOST REV. ROMULO GEOLINA VALLES, D.D.

Diocesan Catholic Schools Superintendent:

Rev. Fr. Russel A. Bantiles, Ph.D

Brief profile of the Archdiocese of Davao

The Archdiocese of Davao is an ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Catholic Church in the Philippines. It is a metropolitan see in southern Mindanao. The archdiocese comprises the chartered city of Davao and the Island Garden City of Samal, Talicud Island, and the municipality of Talaingod all part of the province of Davao del Norte.

Within its jurisdiction are the three suffragan dioceses of DigosTagum, and Mati covering the provinces of Davao del Sur, Davao Occidental, Davao del Norte, Davao de Oro, and Davao Oriental. Davao’s population in 2016 was recorded at 1,747,000.

The archdiocese had its beginnings in the 19th century.  The Recollect Fathers came in 1848 and stayed until 1858. The following years saw the coming of Jesuit missionaries. Upon the request of the Bishop of Zamboanga, the Priests of the Foreign Mission Society of Quebec (PME Fathers) came to Davao in 1937and began massive pastoral work in Davao City and the then three provinces of Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, and DavaoOriental.

On Dec. 17, 1949, the Holy See raised the Davao Mission to the rank of Prelature of Davao. Subsequently, Archbishop Clovis Thibault, DD, was appointed as its first ordinary.

On July 11, 1966, the Prelature of Davao was elevated into a diocese, and Archbishop Thibault, PME, DD took canonical possession of the Diocese of Davao as its first bishop.

On June 29, 1970, the Diocese of Davao was erected into an archdiocese with The Most Reverend Archbishop Clovis Thibault, PME as its first Archbishop.

Upon the retirement of Archbishop Thibault on Dec. 9, 1972, his Co-Adjutor, The Most Reverend Archbishop Antonio Ll. Mabutas, DD took over as the second Archbishop of Davao.

The Most Reverend Archbishop Fernando R. Capalla, DD became the third Archbishop of Davao on Nov. 28, 1996, until his retirement in 2012.

The Most Reverend Archbishop Romulo G. Valles, DD became the fourth Archbishop of Davao on May 22, 2012.

Diocese of Mati

Bishop:

THE MOST REV. ABEL CAHILES APIGO, DD

Diocesan Catholic Schools Superintendent:

Rev. Fr. Jay B. Ramos

Brief Profile of the Diocese of Mati:

St. John Paul II created the new Diocese of Mati on February 16, 1984, taking part of the territory from the Diocese of Tagum. The Most Rev. Patricio Alo, DD. until then the Auxiliary Bishop of Davao, was appointed as the first Bishop of Mati.

The Diocese of Mati covers the province of Davao Oriental which lies along the easternmost part of Region XI.  To the east is the Pacific Ocean, to the west is the Davao Provine, to the north are the provinces of Agusan del Sur and Surigao del Sur and to the south is the Davao Gulf and the Celebes Sea. The original inhabitants of this area before the arrival of the migrants from the North are the Mandaya, Mansaka, Manobo, Mamanua, Mangguangan, and Tagakaolo.

A few of the parishes in the Diocese are some of the oldest in Mindanao which go all the way back to the late period of the Spanish regime.

The missionaries who first came to the Diocese of Mati were the Augustinians, the Jesuits, and the Recollects. In the late 1930s to the 1940s, the PME Fathers took over the administration of the parishes that were already established by then.  In the 1950s, the Maryknoll missionaries continued the missionary engagements throughout Davao Oriental.

On February 10, 2018, Pope Francis appointed The Most Rev. Abel C. Apigo, DD as its new bishop.  Bishop Apigo hails from the Archdiocese of Davao. He was officially installed as the Bishop of Mati on April 25, 2018.
